Why Helping Too Much Can Make Your Child Talk Less
Many parents truly love their children and put in a lot of effort to care for them.
But in daily life, we may not realise that we are doing things like this:
👉 When your child points, you quickly pass it to them
👉 Before your child speaks, you speak for them
👉 When your child cries, you immediately give in
Over time, you may start to notice something:
Your child doesn’t seem to need to talk anymore.
🌱 Why does helping too much make children speak less?
The reason is actually quite simple:
👉 If a child can get what they want without speaking
👉 They won’t feel the need to speak
For children, language is a tool.
If they can achieve what they want without using it, they naturally won’t use it.
📌 So it’s not that the child can’t speak,
but that they are not required to speak.
🐝 What Lullabee Teachers Do Differently
At Lullabee, we don’t rush to help.
Instead, we create small moments for children to try and express.
✨ We pause and wait
When a child reaches for something, we don’t give it immediately.
We make eye contact, smile, and give them a few seconds to respond.
✨ We guide, not replace
Instead of speaking for the child, we gently guide them:
👉 “What do you want?”
👉 “Water?”
👉 “You want water?”
Even if it’s just a small sound or attempt, we celebrate it 👏
⚠️ Common things parents may do without realising
❌ Speaking for the child too often
❌ Giving in immediately when the child cries
❌ Doing things for the child because we think they cannot
❌ Getting used to handling everything for them
These actions are very natural, but they can lead to:
👉 Fewer opportunities to express
👉 Less motivation to try
🏫 Why do children talk more in school?
Many parents notice this:
👉 The child is quiet at home
👉 But starts talking more in school
This happens because:
• They interact with other children
• There are more situations that require communication
• Teachers don’t over-help
• The environment encourages them to express themselves
📌 Children grow in environments where they need to communicate.
🌈 What can parents do?
You don’t need to change everything at once. Just start small:
✔ Wait 3 seconds before helping
✔ Ask simple questions and give your child time to respond
✔ Use simple words and repeat
✔ Give your child more chances to express
Small changes can lead to big progress 🌱
❤️ A message for parents
You help your child because you love them.
But sometimes, helping a little less… is actually helping them more.
📩 If you want your child to have more opportunities to express
Besides practising at home,
you can also let your child learn in an environment with peer interaction 😊
Many children gradually build their communication skills in such environments.
