Cold Chain Monitoring Case Study: Freshliance Coeus Mini WiFi/4G Data Logger at a Fresh Food Supermarket in Southern Johor Bahru

A fresh food supermarket in Southern Johor Bahru, Malaysia replaced manual temperature checks with the Freshliance Coeus Mini WiFi/4G real-time temperature and humidity data logger, giving its cold rooms and freezers continuous, remote monitoring around the clock.

  • Fresh food supermarket with multiple walk-in cold storage and freezer rooms
  • Deployed Freshliance Coeus Mini WiFi/4G real-time data loggers
  • Continuous remote temperature and humidity visibility, day and night
  • Replaced manual spot-checks with automated cloud-based logging

Overview

Located in Southern Johor Bahru, this fresh food supermarket supplies its community with a wide range of chilled and frozen goods, from fresh cuts of meat to frozen convenience items. Like any grocery retailer built around perishable inventory, the business depends on consistent cold storage conditions to keep produce safe, saleable, and compliant with food safety expectations.

To support that commitment, the supermarket operates several walk-in cold rooms and freezer compartments behind the retail floor, each protected by PVC strip curtains and insulated panel walls to hold temperature. Keeping those rooms within a safe range around the clock — not just during business hours — became the operational priority that led the team to look for a monitoring upgrade.

The Challenge

Before installing a dedicated temperature and humidity monitoring system, the supermarket's cold chain oversight relied on periodic manual checks — staff walking the cold rooms with a handheld thermometer during opening hours. That approach left several gaps common to fresh food retail:

  • No visibility outside business hours. Overnight, on weekends, or during any period the store was closed, a compressor fault, a door left ajar, or a power interruption could go unnoticed until staff returned — by which point stock may already have been compromised.
  • Manual checks are inherently inconsistent. Spot readings taken a few times a day miss short excursions between checks, and results depend on staff following the routine every time, on every shift.
  • Risk of spoilage and shrinkage. Any undetected temperature drift in a cold room or freezer directly threatens the freshness and safety of the meat, produce, and frozen goods stored inside, with the potential for costly write-offs.
  • No auditable record. Handwritten or ad hoc logs are difficult to review, hard to produce during a food safety inspection, and offer no automated way to flag a deviation the moment it happens.

The Solution

To close those gaps, the supermarket installed the Freshliance Coeus Mini WiFi/4G real-time data logger — a compact temperature and humidity monitoring device — directly inside its cold storage rooms. Each unit was mounted on the overhead support framework near the cold room entrance, cable-tied clear of foot traffic and product handling, and connected to a standard wall outlet.

Real-Time WiFi/4G Connectivity

Each logger connects over the store's WiFi and uploads readings to the cloud continuously, so the current condition of every monitored room is visible remotely at any time — not just when someone is physically on site to check.

Continuous Temperature & Humidity Tracking

The on-device display gives staff an immediate on-site readout of current conditions, while every reading is simultaneously logged automatically, replacing the manual spot-check routine with a continuous, unbroken data record.

Instant Alerts, Around the Clock

If a room drifts outside its safe range — overnight, on a closed day, or during any unattended period — the system is designed to flag it immediately, giving the team a chance to respond before stock is affected rather than discovering a problem after the fact.

Results & Benefits

  • Automated, consistent data logging. Cold room conditions are now recorded continuously instead of relying on staff to complete manual rounds, removing a point of human inconsistency from the process.
  • 24/7 peace of mind. With remote visibility into every monitored room, management no longer has to wait until the next shift to learn whether conditions held steady overnight or over a closed period.
  • A step toward reducing food waste. Faster awareness of a developing issue — rather than discovering it after the fact — gives staff more opportunity to intervene before chilled or frozen stock is compromised.
  • A clearer record to support food safety compliance. Continuous logged data is easier to review and reference than handwritten spot-checks when demonstrating cold chain diligence.
