On 29 September, we celebrate World Heart Day — a time to talk about keeping our hearts healthy. At our clinic, we usually focus on prevention and recovery through physiotherapy, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices. But today, let’s talk about another side of heart health: what happens in an emergency.
This is where AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) come in — simple, life-saving technology that anyone can use.
An AED is a small, portable device that can restart a heart that has suddenly stopped beating (a cardiac arrest). It delivers an electric shock to reset the heart’s rhythm, giving the person a chance to survive until professional medical help arrives.
Best part? You don’t need to be a doctor to use it. AEDs are designed with clear voice instructions so that even bystanders can act quickly.
Every minute without treatment reduces a cardiac arrest patient’s chance of survival by about 10%.
Starting CPR + using an AED within the first 3–5 minutes can increase survival rates by up to 70% or more.
Without an AED, survival rates are often below 10%.
π In short: an AED can mean the difference between life and death.
You’ve probably seen AEDs in airports, malls, gyms, schools, and maybe even your workplace. Many physiotherapy and rehabilitation centers also keep AEDs on-site, because patients may be exercising — and emergencies, while rare, must always be prepared for.
At our clinic, we believe in both prevention (through physiotherapy, exercise, and education) and preparedness (knowing what to do if an emergency happens).
In our last article, we shared how smartwatches and fitness trackers give us early warnings about heart health (heart rate, ECG, oxygen monitoring). That’s prevention technology.
AEDs are the emergency technology that steps in when prevention isn’t enough. Together, they show how powerful technology can be — not only in helping us monitor our hearts but also in saving lives when every second counts.
Learn CPR + AED use πβ‘
Training takes just a few hours, but the knowledge could save someone’s life.
Know where AEDs are π’
Next time you’re at the mall, gym, or office, take note of the nearest AED station.
Spread awareness π’
Talk to friends and family about AEDs. The more people know, the safer our community becomes.
At our clinic, we’re committed to your health beyond just muscles and joints. For patients in cardiac rehab, we help build strength safely. For the wider community, we want to raise awareness of tools like AEDs, because prevention and emergency readiness go hand-in-hand.
π¬ We hope you’ll never need an AED. But if you ever face an emergency, knowing what it is — and how to use it — could save a life.
