Can I Still Exercise in the Third Trimester?
Doctor's Safety Guide for Walking

Entering the third trimester (after 28 weeks), your belly grows like a balloon, and your body feels heavy. You often hear conflicting advice: Elders say "walk more to make birth easier," but your body screams "I'm too tired to move."

So, can you still walk for exercise? The answer is YES. Moderate walking helps with natural birth, but you must do it correctly. Here is the Newparents safety guide.

1. Three Benefits of Walking (If You Can)

Unless your doctor has ordered "Strict Bed Rest," walking is the best exercise for late pregnancy.

  • Helps Baby Engage: Gravity works in your favor when you walk upright, helping the baby's head move down into the pelvis, preparing for labor.
  • Reduces Edema (Swelling): Many moms suffer from "pig trotters" (swollen feet). Walking improves blood circulation and reduces leg swelling.
  • Builds Stamina: Labor is like a marathon. maintaining physical strength now can help shorten labor duration later.

2. How to Walk Safely? (The "Talk Test")

The core rule for the third trimester is "Listen to your body," not hitting 10,000 steps.

  • The Talk Test: You should be able to chat normally while walking. If you are gasping for air, you are overdoing it. Slow down.
  • "Mall Walking" Strategy: In Malaysia's hot weather, outdoor walking can lead to dehydration or heatstroke. Doctors highly recommend walking in Shopping Malls—it's air-conditioned, the floor is flat, there are benches everywhere, and toilets are nearby. Safe and comfortable!
  • Support Belt: If your belly feels heavy or drags you down, wear a maternity support belt to relieve back pressure.

3. STOP Immediately if...

If you experience any of these symptoms while walking, stop and rest. Go to the hospital if necessary:

  • Frequent Contractions: Belly feels hard and tight. If it doesn't stop after resting, it could be signs of Preterm Labor.
  • Severe Pelvic Pain: Sharp pain in the pubic area (SPD) means your pelvis is under too much stress. Do not push through the pain.
  • Leaking Fluid / Bleeding: Even a small amount requires immediate medical attention.

💡 Conclusion: Don't Force It

Never force yourself to "power walk" just because you want a natural birth. Every pregnancy is different.

If you feel refreshed after a walk, keep going. If you feel exhausted, prioritize rest. Saving your energy for the baby's arrival is your most important job! 💖
