Tuberculosis (TB) Awareness

Tuberculosis (TB) Awareness

Recent reported cases in Malaysia serve as a reminder that tuberculosis (TB) is still present and spreads easily in enclosed environments. Facilities are encouraged to follow public health practices recommended by Ministry of Health Malaysia.

What is TB?

Tuberculosis is a bacterial lung infection that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks — especially in poorly ventilated areas.

Watch for These Symptoms

If symptoms last more than 2–3 weeks, medical screening is important:

  • Continuous cough

  • Cough with phlegm or blood

  • Fever or night sweats

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Tiredness or weakness

Who Has Higher Risk?

  • Close contact with TB patients

  • Healthcare or clinic staff

  • Elderly or low immunity individuals

  • People in crowded indoor environments

How to Reduce Transmission

Air & respiratory care

  • Encourage mask use for coughing individuals

  • Improve ventilation or airflow

  • Separate symptomatic persons when possible

Daily hygiene practice

  • Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly

  • Perform hand hygiene after contact

  • Dispose contaminated materials properly

Early action

  • Get tested if cough exceeds 2–3 weeks

  • Follow full treatment if diagnosed
