Dental implants are a wonderful option when a tooth is already missing or cannot be saved. They can help restore your smile, chewing function, and confidence.
But even though implants are strong and reliable, they are still a replacement — not the same as your own natural tooth.
A natural tooth is living tissue. It has nerves, blood supply, and a special ligament around the root that helps you feel pressure when you bite. This ligament also acts like a natural cushion, protecting your tooth and jaw from heavy biting forces.
A dental implant works differently. It is placed directly into the bone and does not have the same natural feeling or shock absorption as a real tooth. Like natural teeth, implants also need regular cleaning and check-ups to stay healthy.
That is why, whenever possible, we always try to preserve your natural tooth first.
Sometimes a tooth can still be saved with treatments like a filling, crown, root canal treatment, gum treatment, or better oral care. If the tooth has a good chance of lasting, keeping it is usually the best option.
Of course, there are times when a tooth is too damaged, badly cracked, loose, or infected to be saved. In those cases, a dental implant may be a good solution.
But before removing a tooth, it is always worth asking:
“Can this tooth still be saved?”
Because whenever possible, the best tooth is the one you already have.
