🩹 Essential First Aid Skills Every Maid Should Know
Home should be a safe place—but accidents can happen when you least expect them. From small kitchen burns to unexpected falls, knowing how to respond quickly and calmly can make a huge difference.
We believe that every maid should feel confident, capable, and ready in any emergency. That’s why first aid training isn’t just a good idea—it’s an essential skill for every home. 💪

Why First Aid Matters

Maids often care for children, elderly family members, and individuals with medical needs. In those critical first moments of an emergency, quick thinking and basic knowledge can:
Prevent minor injuries from getting worse
Offer comfort and stability in stressful situations
Even save a life before help arrives 🚑

🛠️ 7 First Aid Skills Every Maid Should Know

1. Cuts & Scrapes

Small injuries are part of everyday life, especially with kids around. Knowing how to treat them properly can prevent infection and speed up healing.
  •  Clean the wound with antiseptic
  •  Apply gentle pressure to stop bleeding
  •  Cover with a sterile bandage
  •  Monitor for infection (redness, swelling, pus)
2. Burns & Scalds
Hot oil, boiling water, or a heated appliance—burns can happen fast in a busy kitchen. Maids should know how to:
  •  Cool the burn with clean, running water (using ice will damage skin!)
  •  Avoid home remedies like toothpaste or butter
  •  Cover the area with a clean, non-stick dressing/ a sterile gauze
  •  Seek medical attention for severe burns
⚠️ Important:
  • Don’t use fluffy materials like towels or tissues that can shed fibres and stick to the wound
  • Whatever you use should be clean, dry, and placed loosely over the burn

3. Choking (using Heimlich Maneuver) The Heimlich Maneuver is a

first aid technique used to help someone who is choking.

Choking is a life-threatening emergency—knowing what to do can be the difference between panic and protection.
  •  Perform back blows and abdominal thrusts (for adults)
  •  Use the correct technique for infants
  •  Call emergency services and inform employer if the airway isn’t cleared quickly
4. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

When someone’s heart stops or they stop breathing, every second counts.
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is a life-saving technique used when someone’s breathing or heartbeat stops. Here's how to perform CPR:
  1. Check if the person is unresponsive and breathing normal or not.
  2. Start chest compressions: Place your hands in the center of the chest and push down hard and fast, about 2 inches deep, at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
  3. Give rescue breaths (if trained): After 30 compressions, give 2 breaths by tilting the head back, pinching the nose, and breathing into the person's mouth.
  4. Continue until help arrives or the person starts breathing.
Remember: If you are not trained in giving rescue breaths, performing chest compressions alone can still save a life.

5. Falls & Head Injuries
Falls can be especially risky for elderly individuals. Maids should know how to respond safely:
  • 🧠 Look for signs of concussion: Watch for confusion, dizziness, or vomiting.
  • 🚫 Do not move the person: If you suspect a neck or spine injury, keep them still.
  • 📞 Call for help immediately: If symptoms worsen or you’re unsure, contact emergency services and employer.

6. Allergic Reactions
Allergies can develop suddenly and be life-threatening. It's critical to act fast:
  •  Spot the signs of anaphylaxis (swelling, hives, breathing difficulty)
  •  Use an EpiPen if one is available 💉
An EpiPen is a device used to inject epinephrine (adrenaline) into the body during a severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis. It helps to quickly reduce swelling, open up the airways, and improve blood flow, which can be life-saving in an emergency.
  • Contact emergency services and employer immediately 📞

7. Fevers & Seizures

Whether you're caring for a sick child or an elderly person, knowing how to manage fevers and seizures can help you stay calm and keep them safe.
  •  Take temperature accurately
  •  Ensure hydration and use cooling measures
During a seizure, you should never hold someone down because it can be dangerous for them. Here’s why:
  1. Risk of injury: If you try to hold them down, they may move involuntarily, and you could accidentally cause injury to them or yourself.
  2. Breathing difficulties: Restricting their movement can interfere with their ability to breathe freely.
  3. Safety: The best thing you can do is clear the area of any sharp objects or obstacles, allowing them to move safely through the seizure.
Instead of holding them down, just ensure they’re safe, protect their head, and let the seizure run its course. If it lasts for more than 5 minutes or they don’t wake up afterward, it’s important to call for emergency help and employer.
