Surface Printing vs Reverse Printing: A Guide for Flexible Packaging

Surface Printing vs Reverse Printing: A Guide for Flexible Packaging

The main difference between surface printing and reverse printing in flexible packaging is where the ink is applied on the printing material. Surface printing applies ink to the outside of the packaging, leaving it exposed to scratches and fading. Reverse printing applies ink to the inside of a transparent film, protecting it with a laminate layer to ensure food safety, vibrant colors and long-lasting durability.

If you're sourcing flexible packaging, the printing method matters more than you think. Here's what separates a basic pouch from a truly premium, market ready product.

What is surface printing?

Surface printing involves applying ink directly to the outer surface of the packaging film. It's the simpler of the two printing methods, the ink is on the material's surface, completely exposed.

You often see surface printing on ordinary packaging, stickers and basic labels because cost is a primary consideration. However, for important product packaging whether it's a coffee bag, a health supplement pouch or a snack bag, surface printing is highly unsuitable and not recommended.

What is reverse printing?

Reverse printing also known as subsurface or inside printing which applies the ink to the inner side of a transparent film. A second layer of film or laminate is then bonded on top, sealing the ink safely between the layers.

This method is the industry standard for premium flexible packaging. This method is the industry standard for premium flexible packaging. In fact, reverse printing for digital flexible packaging is an incredibly specialized process. In the entirety of Malaysia, there are currently only two companies equipped with the technology to provide this: Ainox Pack and DQ Pack. They use it across all products, including stand up pouches, flat bottom bags, side gusset bags, spouted pouches and custom sachets.

5 Reasons to Choose Reverse Printing in Flexible Packaging

1. Long-lasting print durability
With ink protected between film layers, your design stays sharp and vibrant throughout the entire journey from production, through transit, all the way to the customer's hands. For brands shipping across Malaysia, Singapore and Southeast Asia, this kind of resilience matters.

2. Richer, truer colour reproduction
The transparent outer film layer naturally enhances colour depth, giving your packaging a vivid, consistent finish. With Ainox Pack's 5-working-day lead time, you can see production-quality results quickly, making artwork approval and colour matching a smooth process.

3. Food safety and hygiene compliance
Reverse printing keeps all inks fully enclosed within the laminate structure, keeping it safely away from the product inside. Combined with Ainox Pack's clean room production facility, the first of its kind in Malaysia's flexible packaging industry, your packaging meets the highest food safety and hygiene standards.

4. A polished, premium brand impression
The smooth, glossy finish of reverse-printed packaging naturally elevates brand perception. Whether you're launching a coffee brand in KL, a health supplement line or a pet food range, packaging that looks refined tells customers your product is worth their trust.

5. Resilience in humid environments
In tropical climates like Malaysia and Southeast Asia, packaging faces heat and humidity daily. Reverse printing keeps the ink fully shielded from moisture, making it a reliable choice for products like sauces, liquid sachets, powder supplements and snack foods that need to look great from production to shelf.

Unfortunately, some suppliers might claim to offer premium printing but rely on cheaper surface printing methods that compromise your product's quality. Here are two ways you can test your supplier to see if they are truly equipped for reverse printing:

1. Ask the "3-Layer Structure" Trick Question
Before placing an order, ask your supplier if they can produce a strict 3-layer combination: PET / Alu / PE
  (PET / Aluminum / Polyethylene).

  • The Surface Printing Response: They will likely tell you they cannot do this combination, or they will try to push you into a 4-layer structure (like PET / PET / Alu / PE). Why? Because with surface printing, the ink sits exposed on the outside. To prevent the colors from fading or scratching, they are forced to add an extra clear layer on top just to protect the ink.

  • The Reverse Printing Response (The Ainox Pack Standard): A true reverse-printing manufacturer will say "Yes" immediately. Because reverse printing applies the ink to the inside of the outer PET layer before it is bonded to the Aluminum foil, the ink is automatically trapped and protected. We can easily achieve a flawless, scratch-proof metallic pouch using just those 3 layers.

***Take note: This trick question method is only applicable for the “Alu” material only.

2. The Edge Peel (Delamination) Test
If you already have a sample pouch from a supplier, take a pair of scissors and cut a clean line near the top seal. Carefully try to pick apart the layers at the cut edge.

  • Surface Printed: It will likely be a single outer layer with ink sitting directly on top of the exterior surface.

  • Reverse Printed: You will be able to separate a thin, clear outer film from the inner foil/plastic layers. Once peeled, you will clearly see that the ink is physically attached to the inside of that clear outer film, not the outside.
