Resonance of Souls: Bayu Utomo Radjikin’s Unspoken Depths

Stepping into Resonance of Souls is like crossing into a realm where silence speaks and stillness trembles with unspoken energy. This latest solo exhibition by celebrated Malaysian artist Bayu Utomo Radjikin, held at HARTA Space from 6 June 2025 – 29 June 2025, invites viewers into a profound emotional encounter — one where the soul, through form and texture, finds its resonance.

Widely known for his emotive blend of figuration and abstraction, Bayu presents a body of work that bridges physicality with internal struggle. Each piece confronts the viewer with anonymous, masculine figures, rendered with striking neutrality. “These figures are drawn from different sources,” Bayu shared with us during the preview.

Each painting has a subject, but the figure itself is not fixed to it. I want the audience to interpret freely — to bring their own perspective, to feel what they feel.”

That invitation to engage becomes the quiet power behind this exhibition.

Set against fields of raw, abstract expression, Bayu’s figures don’t dictate; they evoke. Their dramatic postures and textured surroundings suggest resistance, introspection, and discipline, but the narrative is left open, personal.

“The body is a vessel,” Bayu explains, “and through that, I try to articulate the silent emotional struggles we all carry.”

Bayu, a founding member of the Matahati Collective and founder of HOM Art Trans, has exhibited across prestigious platforms, from Tate Britain to Wei-Ling Gallery. Yet Resonance of Souls feels distinctly intimate — a return not to form, but to feeling. There’s a maturity in the restraint of the palette, the consistent formats, and the silence between the brushstrokes. It’s a reflection of Bayu’s continued evolution as an artist who dares to express without instruction.

Hosted at HARTA Space, a vibrant cultural initiative by HABIB, the exhibition finds a fitting home. More than just a gallery, HARTA blends heritage with contemporary expression — a concept that harmonises beautifully with Bayu’s vision. Visitors can explore not just the art, but Malaysia’s rich traditions housed within a space that includes a heritage jewellery museum and café.
