Malaysians Can Convert Foreign Driving Licences Starting June 2026
Starting June 1, 2026, Malaysians holding foreign driving licences without restrictions will be allowed to convert their licences to Malaysian driving licences at all Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) offices nationwide. The move was announced as part of efforts to improve convenience for Malaysians living, working, or managing affairs overseas.
Under the updated policy, eligible Malaysians can apply for licence conversion regardless of where their foreign licence was issued, as long as it meets the required conditions. Previously, licence conversion was limited to specific groups such as Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) participants, diplomatic personnel, and selected special cases.
The licence conversion programme was previously suspended in May last year as part of the government’s initiative to strengthen road safety, governance, and driving standards. With the revised procedures, authorities aim to ensure applicants continue to meet Malaysia’s driving and regulatory requirements while also addressing the increasing mobility needs of Malaysians abroad.
According to the transport ministry, the updated system is designed to balance public convenience and road safety standards, especially amid today’s challenging global and domestic economic conditions.
