Hardness Testing for Soft Materials – Durometer (Shore A, B & D)

When testing soft materials such as rubber, elastomers, plastics, and polymers, conventional hardness methods like Rockwell or Brinell are not suitable. Instead, a durometer hardness tester is used.

Durometer measures the resistance of a material to indentation using a calibrated spring force and a standardized indenter. The depth of indentation is then converted into a Shore hardness value ranging from 0 to 100.

Different Shore scales are used depending on material stiffness:

🔹 Shore A – Commonly used for soft rubber, elastomers, and flexible plastics
🔹 Shore B – For slightly harder rubber and semi-rigid materials
🔹 Shore D – Used for harder plastics and rigid polymers

During testing, the indenter is pressed onto the material surface with a controlled force, and the hardness value is obtained based on how much the indenter penetrates the material.
