Malaysia Better Positioned to Handle Rising Oil Prices, Says Finance Minister

Malaysia is in a stronger position to deal with the recent rise in global oil prices despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East. According to Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan, the country’s status as a net energy exporter gives it certain advantages in managing short-term volatility in the energy market.

He explained that because Malaysia produces and exports energy resources, it is able to benefit to some extent from higher global prices. This position also helps ensure stable gas supply for utilities and industrial sectors, putting the country in a better situation than many nations that rely heavily on imported energy. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that increases in global oil prices could still have some impact domestically.

The government is therefore focusing on reducing the effects on Malaysians, particularly households, by maintaining stable fuel supplies and continuing subsidy measures where necessary. Authorities are also keeping a close watch on the availability of petrol and gas nationwide to ensure that supply remains sufficient.

According to Amir Hamzah, petrol supply levels in the country are currently stable, with fuel stocks considered to be at healthy levels. The government will continue monitoring the situation to ensure the public does not face disruptions.

He also highlighted the earlier assurance by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that subsidised petrol prices are expected to remain unchanged for the next two months, as part of efforts to protect consumers from sudden price increases.

Amir Hamzah added that recent reforms in subsidy rationalisation and cost management over the past two years have helped strengthen Malaysia’s ability to manage fiscal pressure during periods of rising energy prices. However, he noted that the country’s resilience will depend on how long the current global tensions continue. If the situation does not drag on for an extended period, Malaysia is expected to remain capable of weathering the impact.
