Sodium Thiosulphate - Keeping Our Oceans Safe
One Chemical That Keeps Our Oceans Safe:
Every large vessel carries ballast water — seawater pumped into dedicated tanks to maintain stability, balance, and structural integrity during loading, unloading, or rough seas.
Without it, a ship could easily lose control or suffer hull stress during a voyage.
A Panamax ship holds about 20 million litres, while a Malaccamax vessel can exceed 35 million litres of ballast water.
To prevent marine organisms from spreading between ports, ships disinfect this water using chlorine.
But before discharge, that chlorine must be neutralised to protect marine life and meet IMO/MARPOL standards.
That’s where Sodium Thiosulphate comes in 💧
It reacts instantly with chlorine, turning it into harmless salt.
Two forms, same purpose:
🔹 Anhydrous (Na₂S₂O₃) – Pure, water-free, higher concentration
🔹 Pentahydrate (Na₂S₂O₃·5H₂O) – Stable and easier to handle
At GKE Fair Chem, we supply both grades — marine-approved, COA/MSDS certified, and blended right here in Singapore 🇸🇬.
