Proton Previews e.MAS 7 PHEV, Malaysia’s First Dual-Powered EV

Proton has lifted the curtain on its first plug-in hybrid model ahead of its official launch, confirming it will be known as the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV. Marketed as Malaysia’s first “dual-powered EV”, the new SUV blends plug-in hybrid technology with a notably long electric-only driving range.

Positioned alongside the fully electric eMAS 7, the PHEV version is built on Proton’s Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform, which has been designed from the outset for electrified vehicles. At launch, the e.MAS 7 PHEV will be offered in three variants – Prime, Premium and Premium Plus, though pricing has yet to be announced.

Under the bonnet, the e.MAS 7 PHEV shares its core hardware with models like the Geely Starship 7 and Galaxy EX5. It uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder hybrid engine producing 99 hp and 125 Nm, paired with an 11-in-1 dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). An integrated electric motor adds 218 hp and 262 Nm, bringing total system output to 262 hp.

Proton claims the petrol engine achieves an impressive 46.5% thermal efficiency, contributing to strong overall efficiency figures. The Prime and Premium variants accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 8.0 seconds, while the heavier Premium Plus completes the sprint in 8.2 seconds. All versions share a 170 km/h top speed.

Battery size varies by variant. The Prime and Premium models are equipped with an 18.4 kWh LFP battery, offering up to 83 km of electric-only range (WLTP) and a combined driving range of up to 943 km, with fuel consumption rated at 4.3 L/100 km. Stepping up to the Premium Plus, it features a larger 29.8 kWh LFP battery that extends the EV-only range to 146 km (WLTP) and pushes the total range to nearly 1,000 km, while still maintaining a competitive fuel consumption figure of 4.4 L/100 km.

Charging is also well covered. The lower variants support 30 kW DC fast charging, while the Premium Plus gets 60 kW DC, cutting charging times significantly. All versions support 6.6 kW AC charging, along with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) functions.

Dimension-wise, the e.MAS 7 PHEV measures 4,740 mm long, 1,940 mm wide, and 1,685 mm tall, with a 2,755 mm wheelbase. It sits slightly larger than its EV sibling and on the upper end of the C-segment SUV class. Boot space starts at 528 litres, expanding to 2,065 litres with the rear seats folded.
Although preview units remain camouflaged, Proton has confirmed a drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd. Design differences from the EV include unique lighting elements, revised bumpers, and a redesigned tailgate, giving the PHEV its own identity.

Even the base Prime variant comes well equipped, featuring LED lighting, 18-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, heated power mirrors, and a full-width LED rear light bar. The Premium adds 19-inch wheels, a powered tailgate, and enhanced lighting, while the Premium Plus stands out with a panoramic sunroof.

Inside, the e.MAS 7 PHEV mirrors the EV’s tech-focused layout with a 10.2-inch digital instrument display and a large 15.4-inch infotainment screen running Flyme Auto OS. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, bilingual operation, and over-the-air updates.

Higher variants gain premium touches such as a head-up display, 16-speaker audio system, ventilated and memory front seats, ambient lighting, and a 360-degree camera system.

Safety is a strong point across the range. All models come with seven airbags and Level 2 ADAS as standard. Higher trims expand this suite with features like blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic braking, emergency lane assist, and door open warning.

Although still in preview form, the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV already showcases a well-rounded package, combining long electric range, efficient hybrid performance, and modern technology. More details, including pricing and final specifications, will be revealed closer to its official launch.
