Unknowingly, you have reached the 20th week of pregnancy! This means you have successfully made it to the Halfway Mark π.
This period is often called the "Golden Period" of pregnancy—morning sickness usually fades, and appetite improves. Most importantly, this is a crucial time for baby's development, and the famous "Detail Scan" usually happens during these few weeks.
1. Baby's "Specs" (Size Update)
- Size: Your baby is now about the size of a Banana! Length is approx. 16-25cm, weight around 300g.
- Skin: Covered in a white, waxy substance called "Vernix Caseosa". This natural moisturizer protects baby's skin from the amniotic fluid.
- Senses: Hearing is well-developed. He/She can now hear your heartbeat, stomach growls, and even your voice singing at KTV!
2. Highlight of the Week: Detail Scan
In Malaysia, doctors usually recommend a Detail Scan between weeks 20-24. This isn't just for photos, but to screen for abnormalities:
- Organ Development: Checking if the heart (4 chambers), kidneys, and bladder are complete.
- Physical Structure: Checking for Cleft Lip, Spina Bifida, and counting fingers/toes.
- Gender Reveal: If baby cooperates (doesn't cross legs), you can clearly see if it's a Boy or Girl this week!
3. Mom's Experience: First "Real Kicks"
- Stronger Movements: After week 20, kicks become more powerful. It's time to start the habit of Kick Counting.
- Increased Appetite: Many moms feel very hungry. Eat well, but control sugar intake to avoid Gestational Diabetes (GDM).
- Back Pain: As the belly grows, your center of gravity shifts. Use a Pregnancy Pillow between your legs while sleeping to relieve back pain.
