If you've been planning a home renovation in Malaysia, you've probably come across the terms "dry kitchen" and "wet kitchen" more times than you can count. But what exactly is the difference — and more importantly, do you actually need both in your home? Here's a straightforward breakdown to help you decide what works for your lifestyle, your space, and your renovation budget.
The dry kitchen is your presentable, everyday kitchen — usually open to the dining or living area. It's where you make coffee, plate up food, use the microwave, and keep your appliances on display. Because it's visible from the main living space, aesthetics matter here. Think clean countertops, matching cabinetry, and good lighting.

What is a wet kitchen?
The wet kitchen is the workhorse — a separate, enclosed space (usually at the back of the home) where the heavy cooking happens. Stir-frying, deep-frying, boiling big pots of soup — all the high-heat, high-smoke, high-splatter cooking that Malaysians love stays here, away from the rest of the home.

Do you need both?
Malaysian cooking — from rendang to sambal to fried rice — produces a lot of smoke, steam, and splatter. A wet kitchen keeps that contained. Without one, your dry kitchen cabinets, walls, and open-plan living space will absorb years of oil and odour that's very hard to undo.
If your cooking style is mostly light — pasta, salads, reheating, air-frying — a well-ventilated single kitchen can absolutely work. Many modern condos are designed this way, with a powerful hood and sealed cabinetry to manage the occasional heavier cook.
In Malaysia, a wet kitchen is still a strong selling point — especially for landed homes. Buyers with families or elderly parents who cook daily will almost always prefer a home that has one. If you're renovating with resale in mind, it's worth considering even if you don't use it heavily yourself.
No dedicated wet kitchen space? Many condo owners convert their service yard into a functional wet cooking area with a portable gas stove, a small sink, and good ventilation. It's not glamorous, but it works — and it keeps your main kitchen pristine.

Design tip: If you have both, let your dry kitchen shine aesthetically — it's the one your guests will see. Invest in quality cabinetry, consistent finishes, and good under-cabinet lighting. Your wet kitchen just needs to be practical: durable surfaces, easy-to-clean tiles, and strong ventilation.

Whether you're designing from scratch or rethinking your current layout, the dry-wet kitchen setup is one of the most impactful decisions in any renovation. Get it right, and your kitchen will work for you — not against you — for years to come.
