JPJ Issues Reminder for Malaysians Driving to Thailand

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is reminding Malaysians travelling to Thailand by car to bring a physical driving licence, as the digital licence in the MyJPJ app is not recognised by Thai authorities.

While digital driving licences are valid in Malaysia, drivers entering Thailand must present either a physical Malaysian driving licence or a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) during road inspections.

The reminder comes after a Malaysian driver was fined 1,000 baht (around RM121) for failing to produce a physical driving licence at a checkpoint in Thailand. Although the driver showed the digital licence through the MyJPJ app, Thai authorities did not accept it under their regulations.

JPJ also noted that Malaysians no longer need to provide proof of overseas travel when applying for a physical driving licence, following a rule change introduced in January 2026. The RM20 application fee for Malaysian citizens remains unchanged.
Motorists planning to drive across the Malaysia–Thailand border are advised to carry a physical driving licence before their journey to avoid fines and unnecessary travel disruptions.
