MotoGP wildcards banned from 2027 – A New Era Begins

The world of MotoGP is set for a major change as wildcard entries will be completely abolished starting from the 2027 season.

This decision was officially announced by the Grand Prix Commission as part of a broader regulatory overhaul, aligning with upcoming technical changes in the premier class of motorcycle racing.

📌 What Is a MotoGP Wildcard?

A wildcard entry allows a guest rider to participate in a race without being a full-time competitor. These entries are typically used by:

  • Test riders
  • Former racers making a comeback
  • Manufacturers testing new components or bikes under real race conditions

Teams such as Ducati, Yamaha, Honda, KTM, and Aprilia have historically used this system to accelerate development.

❌ No More Wildcards from 2027

Starting in 2027:

  • Wildcard entries will no longer be allowed in MotoGP
  • Test riders will not be permitted to join race weekends
  • Only full-time riders and official replacement riders can compete

This rule applies equally to all manufacturers, regardless of concession status.

⚙️ Why Are Wildcards Being Removed?

The decision is driven by several key factors:

  • 💸 Reducing development and operational costs
  • ⚖️ Creating a more level playing field among teams
  • 🚫 Preventing the use of race weekends as testing sessions

This ensures that all teams compete under more controlled and fair conditions.

🔧 Linked to New 850cc Regulations

The removal of wildcard entries comes alongside major technical changes:

  • Engine capacity will be reduced from 1000cc to 850cc starting in 2027
  • New-generation machines will no longer be tested during race events via wildcard

This marks a significant shift in how teams approach bike development.

⚠️ What About the 2026 Season?

For the 2026 season:

  • Wildcards are still allowed
  • However, they are subject to stricter limitations
  • 2027-spec bikes (850cc) are not permitted in wildcard appearances

🏍️ Lower Classes Unaffected

The rule change only applies to MotoGP:

  • ✅ Moto2 – wildcard entries remain
  • ✅ Moto3 – wildcard entries remain
