In countries with cold winters, flea and tick season ends when temperatures drop. Here in Malaysia, we don't get that break. Our warm, humid weather lasts all year — and so does the risk from fleas and ticks. At Season Pets House in Kepong, it's one of the most practical things we talk through with dog and cat parents, because a little prevention saves a lot of itching, discomfort and worry.
Fleas and ticks thrive in warm weather. The American Kennel Club notes that these parasites flourish in warm conditions and slow down once temperatures drop — but in Malaysia, temperatures essentially never drop that far. That's why veterinary parasite experts increasingly recommend year-round protection: the Companion Animal Parasite Council calls for year-round, lifelong flea and tick prevention. In our climate, that advice fits especially well.
It's tempting to see fleas and ticks as just a nuisance, but they carry real health risks. Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center notes that fleas commonly cause tapeworm infections and flea allergy dermatitis (an itchy skin reaction to flea bites), while ticks can transmit diseases such as anaplasmosis and Lyme disease. Flea allergy dermatitis is a particularly common cause of itching — for some pets, just a few bites can trigger weeks of scratching. In a humid climate like ours, where pets already face more skin challenges, keeping parasites off is part of keeping skin healthy.
VCA Animal Hospitals explains that flea and tick prevention uses a range of products that control parasites on your pet and help stop infestations in the home. A sensible routine combines several things:
Flea and tick products are pesticides, so use them carefully. Never use a dog-only product on a cat — some ingredients used in dog flea products can be very toxic to cats. Always read the label, choose the product for the right species, dose by your pet's weight, and don't combine products without veterinary advice. Natural sprays and medicated shampoos are useful for everyday care and relief, but for dependable, ongoing protection — and especially if your pet has had a tick-borne illness or a heavy infestation — a vet-recommended preventive should be the backbone of your plan.
A thorough groom is a great chance to spot a flea or tick problem early. During a bath and groom, our certified, award-winning team works through the coat, can use a suitable shampoo, and will flag fleas, flea dirt or ticks so you can act quickly. Explore our grooming services or message us to book a flea-and-tick bath.
See your vet if your pet has a heavy flea infestation, constant scratching or biting at the skin, hair loss or scabbing (possible flea allergy dermatitis), a tick you can't safely remove, or any signs of illness after a tick bite such as lethargy, fever, lameness or loss of appetite. Your vet can also set up the right year-round prevention plan. This article is general guidance, not a diagnosis.
Do I need flea and tick prevention all year in Malaysia? Yes — our warm, humid climate doesn't have a cold season to slow parasites down, so fleas and ticks are a year-round risk here. Veterinary parasite guidelines increasingly recommend year-round, continuous prevention, which fits Malaysia especially well. Talk to your vet about a suitable ongoing preventive for your pet.
Can I use the same flea product on my dog and my cat? No — this is a serious safety point. Some ingredients in dog flea and tick products can be highly toxic to cats, so never use a dog-only product on a cat. Always read the label, use a product made for that specific species, and dose by your pet's weight. If you're unsure, check with your vet before applying anything.
My pet is itching — is it always fleas? Not always, but fleas are a very common cause, and flea allergy dermatitis can make a pet itch intensely from just a few bites. Other causes include skin infections, allergies and mites. Check the coat for fleas and flea dirt, keep up parasite prevention, and if the itching continues or you see hair loss, scabs or sore skin, see your vet to find the real cause.
