SINGAPORE (June 16): Malaysia is looking to deepen collaboration with Singapore in the field of housing development, particularly through talent exchange and knowledge-sharing initiatives, according to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
Nga said Malaysia stands to benefit from Singapore’s experience in public housing, especially through established systems such as the Housing & Development Board (HDB) model and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
“We hope to have experts share their experience with us, so that we can continuously improve our own housing initiatives,” he said in a Facebook post.
Bilateral Discussions on Sustainable Urbanisation
On Monday, Nga held a bilateral meeting with Singapore’s Minister for National Development, Chee Hong Tat, to review ongoing regional cooperation and strengthen ties in sustainable urban development.
The discussions included progress updates on initiatives under a previously signed memorandum of understanding (MoU), as well as potential new areas of collaboration involving sustainable housing practices and modern construction technologies.
Both sides also explored ways to enhance long-term cooperation in urban planning and development strategies.
Focus on Knowledge Transfer and Talent Mobility
A key focus of Malaysia’s proposal is enabling greater mobility of expertise between both countries, particularly in areas related to public housing design, urban redevelopment, and sustainable city planning.
By leveraging Singapore’s experience, Malaysia aims to refine and improve its own housing policies and implementation frameworks.
Regional Cooperation and ASEAN Outlook
Nga also expressed Malaysia’s support for Singapore ahead of its upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027. He voiced confidence that Singapore will continue to play a leading role in promoting regional cooperation, sustainability, and inclusivity amid global uncertainties.
Key Takeaways
Malaysia’s engagement with Singapore highlights a strategic effort to strengthen public housing development through international cooperation and knowledge exchange. By studying established models such as Singapore’s HDB and URA systems, Malaysia aims to enhance the efficiency and quality of its own housing initiatives.
The discussions also reflect a broader regional push towards sustainable urbanisation, where collaboration in policy, planning, and construction technology is increasingly seen as essential for long-term development goals across ASEAN.
