MRL: ECRL Fare Rates Circulating Online Are Unofficial and Still Under Review

KUALA LUMPUR (June 16): Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has clarified that fare rates for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) currently circulating on social media are speculative and have not been officially confirmed.

In a statement, MRL said that ticket pricing for the upcoming rail service, scheduled to begin operations next January, is still in the process of being refined through ongoing discussions with relevant stakeholders.

The company emphasised that no official fare structure has been announced at this stage, and the information circulating online does not reflect the final charges that will be implemented.

Fare Structure Still Under Evaluation

MRL stated that the fare-setting process involves multiple agencies, including the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), to ensure that pricing is reasonable, competitive and aligned with public transport objectives.

According to the company, the goal is to develop a fare structure that balances affordability for passengers with the need to maintain a sustainable and efficient rail service.

The Ministry of Transport will announce the official ECRL fare structure once the evaluation and approval process is completed.

Public Advised to Rely on Official Sources

MRL has urged the public not to speculate or draw conclusions based on unverified information circulating online.

The company also expressed appreciation for public interest in the project and encouraged stakeholders to follow official updates issued through MRL, ECRL, and Ministry of Transport communication channels.

It added that the final fares will be set with consideration for public interest and value for money.

ECRL Project Overview

The East Coast Rail Link spans 665 kilometres, connecting Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang on the east coast with Selangor on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Once operational, the rail line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between key destinations. For example, the journey from Kota Bharu to Gombak is projected to take around four hours, compared to approximately seven hours by road.

Key Takeaways

The ECRL fare structure is still under development and has not been finalised, despite speculation circulating on social media. Authorities are currently working through a structured approval process involving multiple agencies to ensure pricing is fair, competitive and aligned with public transport goals.

The clarification highlights the importance of relying on official announcements for major infrastructure projects, especially those involving nationwide transport systems. Once completed, the ECRL is expected to enhance connectivity between Malaysia’s east and west coasts while significantly reducing travel time for passengers.
