LRT3 Set to Begin Operations by End-June, Enhancing Connectivity Across Shah Alam Corridor

SEPANG (June 16): The long-awaited Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) project connecting Shah Alam and surrounding areas in Selangor is expected to commence operations by the end of June, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

Speaking after chairing the Malaysian Road Safety Council’s 62nd Annual General Meeting, Loke said the rail line is currently undergoing its final testing and trial operations phase. An official launch date is expected to be announced within the next two weeks.

He expressed confidence that the service would begin as scheduled once all operational and safety assessments are successfully completed.

The LRT3 project is a major public transportation initiative designed to improve connectivity between key residential, commercial and industrial areas across the Klang Valley, particularly along the Shah Alam corridor.

Separately, Loke said the proposed legislation to establish the Malaysian Transport Safety Board (MTSB) will not be tabled during the upcoming Parliamentary session. Although the proposal has already received Cabinet approval, discussions are still ongoing with the Public Service Department regarding staffing requirements and organisational structure.

The ministry has also identified potential candidates to serve on the board, with appointments expected to be finalised in due course.

In another development, the Transport Ministry plans to engage with e-hailing operators on potential measures to improve driver safety. Among the options being considered is the installation of dashboard cameras in vehicles, although any implementation would need to carefully balance security needs with passenger privacy concerns.

Loke emphasised that both driver safety and passenger rights must be taken into account when formulating future regulations and operational guidelines for the e-hailing industry.

The upcoming launch of LRT3 marks a significant milestone for public transportation in the Klang Valley. The new rail line is expected to improve accessibility, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance connectivity between residential communities, business districts and industrial hubs across Shah Alam and neighbouring areas. At the same time, the government's plans for the Malaysian Transport Safety Board and enhanced e-hailing safety measures reflect a broader commitment to strengthening transport safety standards and passenger confidence across Malaysia's transportation network.
