How to Switch Your Pet's Food Safely: A 7-Day Transition Guide

Changing your dog's or cat's food too quickly is one of the most common causes of an upset tummy — loose stools, gas or a fussy refusal to eat. The fix is simple: go slow. A gradual transition gives your pet's digestion time to adjust.

The 7-day (or up to 10-day) method

Mix the new food into the old, increasing the new a little each day:

  • Days 1–2: about 25% new food, 75% old
  • Days 3–4: about 50% / 50%
  • Days 5–6: about 75% new, 25% old
  • Day 7 onward: 100% new food

If your pet is sensitive or older, stretch this over 10 days and move slower. The same idea works whether you're switching brands, life stages, or moving between dry and wet food.

Watch how they respond

If you see ongoing loose stools, vomiting or refusal to eat, pause, slow the pace down, and if it continues, check with your vet. Some pets simply need a gentler, longer changeover.
