KUALA LUMPUR (May 30) — Full operations on the Ampang/Sri Petaling Light Rail Transit (LRT) line are expected to resume by June 3 at the latest after repair works are completed following a train derailment near Chan Sow Lin Station.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the damaged train would be removed using a crane before track restoration works commence. Authorities are prioritising the safe recovery of the affected train and the repair of the rail infrastructure to restore normal service as quickly as possible.
According to preliminary findings, the derailment occurred during a track-switching operation. While the first carriage of the six-carriage train successfully entered the intended track, the following carriages were diverted onto a different track leading towards Ampang. The conflicting movement generated forces that pulled the leading carriage off the rails, resulting in the derailment of the first two carriages.
The exact reason behind the malfunction of the track-switching system remains under investigation. Authorities are examining whether the incident resulted from human error, equipment failure, system malfunction, or a combination of factors.
To ensure an independent and transparent investigation, a special task force has been established without the participation of representatives from Prasarana Malaysia Berhad. The investigation team is led by Tan Chee Kee and includes railway engineering specialists.
The task force has been given 30 days to complete its findings and submit a report to the Malaysian Cabinet. The report will be made public to enhance transparency and public confidence in the investigation process.
Investigators will review maintenance records, operational procedures, signalling systems, and data logs from the Operations Control Centre (OCC). Statements will also be obtained from the train driver, OCC personnel, and other relevant individuals involved in the incident.
In addition, the Transport Ministry may consider conducting a broader internal audit of the country's rail transit systems, including both LRT and MRT networks, to identify any systemic issues and strengthen safety standards.
Despite the disruption, all stations on the Ampang/Sri Petaling line remain open. However, temporary operating arrangements have been implemented, requiring passengers to transfer trains at certain stations. Train frequencies have also been adjusted, with services currently operating at intervals of approximately six to eight minutes until repairs are completed.
The derailment occurred on May 28 near Chan Sow Lin Station after a faulty track switch reportedly caused the train to leave the rails. All 25 passengers on board were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Key Lessons Learned
This incident highlights the critical importance of reliable track-switching systems in railway operations. Even a minor malfunction in switching equipment can lead to significant service disruptions and safety risks.
The establishment of an independent investigation demonstrates the value of transparency and accountability in public transport incidents. Thorough reviews of maintenance practices, operational procedures, and system controls are essential to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The event also underscores the need for continuous monitoring, preventive maintenance, and regular audits of rail infrastructure. While the safe evacuation of all passengers reflects effective emergency response procedures, the incident serves as a reminder that safety systems must be continually strengthened to maintain public confidence in urban rail networks.
