APAD Orders Immediate Report from Prasarana After LRT Derailment Near Chan Sow Lin

KUALA LUMPUR (May 29): The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has instructed Prasarana Malaysia Bhd to immediately submit a comprehensive report following the LRT train derailment near Chan Sow Lin station on Thursday morning.

APAD said the report will be reviewed in detail before further interviews and investigations are carried out to determine the factors that caused the incident. The investigation will also assess whether there were any elements of non-compliance, negligence or breaches of operating licence conditions.

In a statement on Friday, APAD said it had opened an investigation paper immediately after receiving instructions from Transport Minister Anthony Loke to conduct a thorough probe into the derailment.

According to the agency, the investigation will examine the actual cause of the incident, including compliance with standard operating procedures, asset maintenance, rail safety systems and train operations.

APAD said it viewed the derailment seriously and had already conducted site inspections to evaluate the situation and ensure immediate action was taken by the operator.

The first inspection was led by APAD director-general Ahmad Radhi Maarof together with officers from the Rail Enforcement and Rail Planning divisions. A second inspection, held at 3pm on Thursday, involved representatives from the Transport Ministry.

The agency said the second inspection focused on reviewing the early progress of the investigation, assessing operational safety levels and identifying follow-up measures that should be implemented by the operator.

APAD stressed that passenger safety, rail system reliability and the integrity of public transport services must never be compromised.

It added that the investigation would be conducted independently, transparently and professionally, with appropriate action to be taken under existing laws if necessary.

“If the operator is found to have breached licence conditions, enforcement action may be taken under Section 101 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (Act 715),” APAD said.

The investigation will also look into possible negligence under Sections 202 and 128 of Act 715, including against individuals who may have failed to carry out responsibilities properly or acted negligently in ways that affected rail operational safety.

APAD said it would continue cooperating closely with the Transport Ministry and related agencies to ensure safety standards and public confidence in the rail transport system are maintained.

The derailment involved a train on the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line near Chan Sow Lin station. Preliminary findings indicated that the incident was caused by a faulty track switch. Although train services were disrupted, all 25 passengers were evacuated safely without injuries.

What I learned from this incident is that rail safety systems and maintenance procedures play a critical role in ensuring public transport reliability and passenger safety. The swift response by APAD and the Transport Ministry also highlights the importance of accountability, transparent investigations and strict enforcement in maintaining confidence in Malaysia’s public transportation network.
