The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will continue strict enforcement and public awareness campaigns to curb red-light running and improve compliance with traffic regulations, reported New Straits Times. Non-compliance with traffic signals remains a persistent issue that poses serious risks to the public, said JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli.
“It is still occurring. From time to time, there are offences related to non-compliance with road regulations, especially running red lights. The JPJ, together with the police, will maintain regular patrols and periodic operations to reinforce compliance,” he added.
The statement came following a tragic incident in Jitra, Kedah, where a 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a van allegedly ran a red light and collided with her motorcycle.
Authorities confirmed that the van driver has been arrested to assist with investigations. Initial urine screening returned negative for drugs, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, which covers causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
The JPJ emphasized the need for the public to adhere strictly to traffic signals to prevent accidents and fatalities, highlighting the department’s ongoing commitment to road safety.
With enforcement, public awareness, and regular operations, the JPJ aims to reduce accidents caused by traffic violations, especially red-light offences, across the country.
