Brunei Becomes First Export Market for Updated Proton X50

After receiving a major refresh last year, Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB) has started exporting the updated Proton X50 to Brunei, making it the first overseas market to receive the latest version of the B-segment SUV.

Proton noted that Brunei continues to be one of its most important export destinations. The X50 has proven to be a key contributor to the brand’s success there, consistently ranking as Proton’s best-selling model in the country.

In 2025, PICSB shipped 6,000 vehicles to international markets, with the Proton X50 accounting for nearly one-third (29%) of total export volume. The situation in Brunei mirrors this trend, where the X50 makes up 38% of Proton’s total sales, firmly cementing its position as the brand’s top performer.

For Brunei buyers, the all-new Proton X50 is available in three variants:
  • Executive priced at BND27,499 (around RM87,000)
  • Premium at BND31,500 (around RM99,000)
  • Flagship at BND34,500 (around RM109,000)

The variant lineup and equipment closely match the Malaysian-spec X50, although prices in Brunei are lower compared to Malaysia’s RM89,800 to RM113,300 on-the-road pricing (excluding insurance). Customers in Brunei also enjoy a five-year or 150,000 km warranty, along with six years of free labour service. Additionally, the first 100 buyers will receive a BND1,500 discount, further reducing the purchase price.

According to Proton, the introduction of the refreshed X50 highlights the company’s focus on offering competitive products for international markets, while strengthening its presence in right-hand-drive countries.

The launch event was attended by the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam, Dato’ Mohd Aini Antan, alongside PICSB Vice President Wan Wei, PAD Motors Chairman Tan Kah Boon, and Managing Partner Hambali bin Pehin Salleh.

Commenting on the launch, Wan Wei said Brunei’s role as the first export market for the new X50 reflects Proton’s confidence in the country and the strong partnership with PAD Motors. He added that Brunei continues to play a meaningful role in Proton’s global expansion plans.

With models such as the Proton X50 leading the way, Proton believes it is on track to meet its 2026 export goals and move closer to its long-term target of 330,000 annual sales by 2030, with exports contributing 30% of total volume.
