First Trimester (Months 1–3) | Support Your Pregnancy, Not Over-Nourish It 🌿

#FirstTrimester #PregnancyNutrition #TCMPregnancy #ExpectingMoms

Many expecting mothers start drinking chicken soup, bird’s nest, and tonic soups as soon as they find out they’re pregnant. ❌

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the fetus is still stabilizing during the first trimester. The focus should be on gentle nourishment rather than heavy tonics, and rest rather than excessive stimulation.

During early pregnancy, the mother’s Qi and Blood are directed toward nourishing the fetus, while the digestive system is often more delicate. Over-consuming warming or highly nourishing foods may generate internal heat, disturb fetal stability, worsen morning sickness, dry mouth, and insomnia, and may not be suitable during this stage.

TCM Principles for the First Trimester
• Strengthen the spleen and support digestion
• Soothe the stomach and help stabilize the pregnancy
• Eat light, gentle, and nourishing foods

Recommended Foods

🌾 Grains: Millet, Chinese yam, fox nuts (Euryale seeds), glutinous rice
🥦
Fruits & Vegetables: Pears, grapes, lotus root, broccoli
🐟
Protein: Lean meat, sea perch, crucian carp (in moderation)

These foods help nourish the body gently without creating excessive internal heat.

Foods to Avoid

 1. Avoid overly warming tonics
• Ginseng
• Deer antler velvet
• Longan
• Large amounts of red dates
• Ejiao (donkey-hide gelatin) too early in pregnancy

These foods may generate excessive internal heat and are generally not recommended during early pregnancy.

❄️ 2. Avoid excessively cold foods
• Crab
• Purslane
• Iced foods and drinks
• Excessive watermelon

Cold foods may weaken digestion and are traditionally believed to be less suitable for supporting early pregnancy.

🌶️ 3. Avoid spicy and greasy foods
Hot pot, barbecue, and spicy dishes may increase internal heat and digestive discomfort.

💡 TCM Tip for Expecting Mothers

If you’re experiencing severe morning sickness or poor appetite, don’t force yourself to eat nourishing tonics.

Sometimes, a simple bowl of Chinese yam and millet porridge is one of the gentlest ways to nourish your body.

When your digestive system feels comfortable, your body is better able to support a healthy pregnancy. ✨
