Heavy Cargo Delivery – Forklift or Unloading Equipment May Be Required

Heavy Cargo Delivery – Forklift or Unloading Equipment May Be Required

Heavy Cargo Delivery – Unloading Equipment May Be Required at Destination

Many customers assume that Door-to-Door sea freight includes unloading and moving heavy cargo into their warehouse, factory, or premises.

In commercial freight forwarding, this is not always the case.

Door-to-Door service refers to transportation from the pickup location in China to the consignee’s delivery address in Malaysia. It does not automatically include heavy cargo handling, lifting, or specialised unloading services.

Why Does Heavy Cargo Require the Consignee’s Assistance?

Commercial delivery vehicles are designed primarily for transportation.

When individual packages weigh:

  • 80 kg
  • 150 kg
  • 300 kg
  • 800 kg
  • 2 tonnes or more

they often exceed the safe limits for manual handling.

Typical examples include:

  • Industrial machinery
  • Steel products
  • Stone materials
  • Heavy wooden crates
  • Production equipment
  • Moulds
  • Generators
  • Large furniture

Although these items can be transported safely, unloading usually requires suitable equipment at the delivery site.

Why Doesn’t the Driver Unload Heavy Cargo?

There are several practical reasons.

1. Workplace Safety

Heavy manual lifting presents a significant risk of injury, including back, shoulder and knee injuries.

Professional logistics companies follow workplace safety practices and do not require drivers to manually unload excessively heavy cargo.

2. Delivery Vehicles Are Not Equipped for Heavy Lifting

Standard delivery trucks are intended for transport.

Unless specifically requested in advance, they are generally not equipped with:

  • Forklifts
  • Mobile cranes
  • Electric stackers
  • Loading docks
  • Other heavy lifting equipment

Without the appropriate equipment, unloading heavy cargo safely is often impossible.

3. Every Delivery Site Is Different

Each delivery location has different unloading conditions.

For example:

  • A factory may have its own forklift.
  • A warehouse may have a loading dock.
  • A retail shop may have no unloading equipment.
  • A residential address may not allow forklift access.
  • A construction site may require a crane.

For this reason, unloading arrangements should be confirmed before shipment.

What Should the Consignee Prepare?

Depending on the cargo, the consignee may need to arrange one or more of the following:

Forklift

Suitable for:

  • Palletised cargo
  • Wooden crates
  • Heavy machinery
  • Industrial equipment

Mobile Crane

Suitable for:

  • Oversized cargo
  • Long steel products
  • Large machinery
  • Cargo that cannot be handled by a forklift

Additional Labour

For cargo weighing approximately:

  • 40 kg
  • 50 kg
  • 80 kg

the consignee may arrange sufficient personnel to assist with unloading if appropriate.

What Information Should Be Provided Before Shipment?

Please inform us in advance if your shipment involves any of the following:

  • Individual package exceeds 100 kg
  • Individual package exceeds 200 kg
  • Cargo longer than 3 metres
  • No forklift available at the delivery site
  • Crane required
  • Tail lift truck required
  • Shopping mall delivery
  • Basement delivery
  • Appointment-based delivery

This information enables us to arrange the appropriate vehicle and provide an accurate quotation.

What Happens If No Unloading Equipment Is Available?

If the delivery vehicle arrives and:

  • No forklift is available
  • No crane is available
  • No personnel are available to assist
  • The cargo cannot be unloaded safely

the driver will normally be unable to complete the delivery.

Depending on the situation, additional charges may apply, including:

  • Re-delivery charges
  • Vehicle waiting charges
  • Additional unloading service charges
  • Equipment arrangement charges

Our Recommendation

For shipments such as:

  • Industrial machinery
  • Heavy wooden crates
  • Steel products
  • Stone materials
  • Large furniture
  • Moulds
  • Heavy equipment

we recommend confirming the following before delivery:

  • Is a forklift available?
  • Is a crane required?
  • Are sufficient personnel available to assist with unloading?

Proper preparation helps ensure a smooth delivery, avoids unnecessary delays, and reduces additional handling costs.

Door-to-Door sea freight covers transportation to the consignee’s delivery address. Standard delivery does not include forklift services, crane services, or extensive manual unloading of heavy cargo unless specifically arranged in advance. If unloading equipment or specialised handling is required, please inform us before shipment so that the appropriate vehicle, equipment, and quotation can be arranged.
