Honda Malaysia Completes RM14 Million Solar Energy Project at Melaka Plant

Honda Malaysia has completed a RM14 million renewable energy project at its manufacturing facility in Alor Gajah, Melaka, reinforcing the company’s commitment to more sustainable vehicle production.

The project includes the installation of around 8,960 rooftop solar panels with a combined capacity of more than 5.6 MW, alongside a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that allows excess solar energy to be stored and used when needed, helping improve energy efficiency and provide a more stable power supply for the plant.

Honda Malaysia estimates the solar installation will generate approximately 7,042 MWh of electricity annually, reducing the facility’s carbon emissions by about 4,584 tonnes each year. This represents roughly 10% of the plant’s total CO₂ emissions.

According to the company, the use of BESS makes Honda Malaysia one of the early adopters of the technology among industrial electricity users in the country. The automaker also plans to extend its solar energy initiative to its Bukit Jelutong parts warehouse next year.

In addition, Honda Malaysia has earned a 3.07-star Climate and Sustainability Industry Readiness Index (COSIRI) certification, reflecting its progress in sustainable manufacturing. The company noted that support through Malaysia’s Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA) was instrumental in bringing the project to completion.

Honda Malaysia Managing Director and CEO Narushi Yazaki said the solar energy project marks an important step in the company’s sustainability roadmap, highlighting its ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact while supporting the transition towards carbon-neutral manufacturing.

Honda joins several automotive manufacturers in Malaysia that have integrated solar energy into their operations, as the industry continues to support the country’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
