National Brands Strengthen Hold as Malaysia's Auto Market Grows in 1H 2026

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has reported that 385,353 vehicles were sold in Malaysia during the first half of 2026, marking a 3% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Proton and Perodua continued to dominate the local market, together accounting for 256,304 units sold, giving the two national brands a combined 67% market share. This is an increase of 20,343 units compared to the 235,961 vehicles they delivered in the first half of last year, when they held a 63% share of the market.

Meanwhile, non-national brands recorded 129,049 units sold in the first six months of 2026, reducing their market share to 33%. During the same period in 2025, imported and foreign brands sold 137,675 vehicles, representing 37% of the market, highlighting a continued year-on-year decline.

The latest figures also extend a trend seen in recent years, with Proton and Perodua steadily expanding their share of Malaysia's automotive market. The two brands captured 62% of total industry volume (TIV) in 2024 with 505,689 units sold, following a 66.9% market share in 2023 and 65.1% in 2022.
