For a contract packer, the best code is not automatically the newest or the one that holds the most data. It is the code that the next authorised user can read, interpret and process in the intended workflow. A supermarket checkout, a warehouse receiving bay, a brand owner's traceability system and a consumer's phone may all need different data carriers.
That distinction matters in Malaysia and Singapore, where co-manufacturers often run many stock-keeping units for several brand owners. The printer may be technically able to produce a linear barcode, QR Code and Data Matrix, yet the job can still fail if the wrong symbol, identifier, size or data structure is used.
The practical rule is simple: define the scan event first, obtain the approved data specification, and only then configure the printer.
Before choosing a symbol, ask who will scan it, where the scan happens and what the receiving system expects to do with the result. GS1's implementation guidance follows the same logic: the scanning environment helps determine the correct barcode and production specification.
For a contract-packing brief, document four items:
A symbol that scans but sends unusable data is not a successful implementation.
Linear or one-dimensional barcodes remain appropriate for many established workflows.
For a retail trade item, EAN/UPC is still the first symbol family to consider where existing point-of-sale systems require it. Contract packers should not create a number independently; the approved GTIN and symbol specification should come from the brand owner or the relevant GS1 process.
For an outer case, the choice depends on the data. ITF-14 can be suitable when the carton only needs to carry a GTIN and the code will be printed on corrugated material. GS1-128 is more suitable when the logistics workflow must also encode attributes such as a batch, expiry date, serial number or measure through GS1 Application Identifiers. These are not interchangeable artwork styles. They carry different data and serve different application rules.
Choose a linear barcode when the receiving system already depends on it, the required data fits the approved format, and the available print area can preserve the specified dimensions and quiet zones.
Data Matrix is a two-dimensional symbol that can carry more data in a compact area than a typical linear barcode. In GS1 applications, GS1 DataMatrix can encode identifiers and attributes in a structured element string. It can be useful where space is limited or where a production, healthcare or technical-industry workflow already specifies it.
However, “Data Matrix” is not a complete requirement. A contract packer still needs to know whether the client requires ordinary Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix or Data Matrix carrying a GS1 Digital Link URI. The syntax, scanner configuration and receiving software must match.
GS1 guidance also notes an operational difference: a GS1 DataMatrix element string may require a specialist application or configured scanner, whereas a consumer-facing QR Code can usually be opened by a phone's standard camera. That is why symbol choice must follow the user and system, not a general claim that one 2D code is better.
QR Code is often the most accessible option when consumers or field users need to open web content with a phone. A QR Code can hold a simple web address, but not every QR Code is a GS1 Digital Link.
GS1 Digital Link is a standard way to express GS1 identifiers in a web URI. When used in an appropriate QR Code, it can connect the physical pack to online information while retaining structured product identification. The destination content can be updated without changing the printed code, provided the URI and redirect architecture are managed correctly.
For retail, the move towards two-dimensional barcodes is a transition rather than permission to remove an existing linear code without agreement. The brand owner must confirm retailer and trading-partner readiness, the approved data carrier, the required syntax and any period during which both symbols must appear.
Choose QR Code when phone accessibility or web connection is central, and use GS1 Digital Link only when its identifiers, URI structure and downstream services are deliberately implemented.
Contract packers can prevent avoidable artwork and line changes by requiring a short code brief before setup:
Treat “please add a QR” or “put a barcode here” as an incomplete instruction. The approved brief should include a sample data string and the expected decoded result.

Exact formats and functions vary by model and firmware, so confirm the required combination before choosing equipment.
For intermittent jobs or large, immovable packs, a supported handheld or stamp workflow may suit the operation. For repeated codes on a moving line, an inline system with appropriate sensing—and an encoder where line-speed variation requires it—may offer better control. The same printer could potentially produce several of these marks, but the approval route and data logic remain different.
Before releasing a job, test the actual substrate, final data, normal line speed and intended scanner. Confirm the decoded content—not merely that a beep occurred. Where formal conformance is required, use the applicable GS1/ISO verification process or a recognised verification service. GS1 Malaysia and GS1 Singapore both provide local barcode-related services.

For contract packers, good code selection is specification control. Start with the receiving workflow, use the identifier authorised by its owner, choose the correct data carrier and prove the complete process before production. That discipline is more valuable than choosing a symbol because it looks modern.
Malaysia
