High-Rise Signage Series (Part 2): Choosing the Right Signage Specification

Once the appropriate signage size has been determined, the next question is: "What type of signage should we use?"

For high-rise buildings, signage specification plays a key role in visibility, branding, and long-distance legibility. Each of type has different strengths in terms of brightness, aesthetics, maintenance, and cost, and the final selection is largely influenced by the building identity and the viewing distance.

However, one of the most important factors in choosing the right specification is the installation location. Where the signage is placed on the building will directly affect its visibility, lighting performance, and overall effectiveness. For example, signage installed at rooftop level or on the crown of a building typically requires high-brightness solutions such as Exposed LED or large-scale Channel Letters to ensure it can be seen from far distances. On the other hand, signage positioned at podium levels or mid-rise façades may benefit more from Back-Lit (Halo-Lit) or Fabric Lightbox designs, where aesthetic integration and closer viewing distances are more important than extreme brightness.

Environmental conditions also play a role in the decision. Buildings located along highways or in dense commercial districts often require stronger, more attention-grabbing systems, while signage in mixed-use or residential-adjacent areas may need a more controlled and refined lighting approach. Ultimately, the best signage specification is not just about design preference, but about matching the right system to the right installation context to achieve optimal visibility, compliance, and brand presence.

Signage Comparison

Type Advantages Disadvantages Suitable Use
Front-Illuminated Channel Letters Good visibility, clean look, works day & night Needs glare control, bulkier Most high-rise buildings
Exposed LED Very bright, long-distance visibility Not suitable for residential areas, harsh look Highways, commercial zones, rooftops
Back-Illuminated (Halo-Lit) Premium look, soft glow Weak far-distance visibility Design-led logos, podiums, feature walls
3D Box-Up (Non-lit) Simple, cost-effective No night visibility Corporate / budget projects
Fabric Lightbox Even lighting, good for large signs Less durable, mid-range visibility Podiums, mid-rise buildings
LED Screen Dynamic, high impact Expensive, high maintenance Malls, commercial hubs, busy areas
