Proton Invests RM37 Million to Boost EV Production in Malaysia
PROTON is taking another major step in its electrification journey with plans to expand the production capacity of its New Energy Vehicle (NEV) plant at the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjung Malim. The move comes as demand for the brand’s electric vehicle lineup continues to grow both in Malaysia and overseas markets.
The national automaker will invest RM37 million to upgrade the facility, which only began operations less than a year ago. Once completed, the expansion will increase the plant’s annual production capacity from 20,000 units to 42,000 units, allowing PROTON to better meet rising demand while supporting future export opportunities.
Built with advanced manufacturing technologies, the NEV facility features robotic automation, cloud-based production systems, and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) integration. The flexible setup allows multiple vehicle models to be assembled on a single production line, improving efficiency and scalability.
The expansion has been driven largely by the strong performance of the Proton e.MAS lineup. The Proton e.MAS 5 delivered 8,472 units during the first four months of 2026, making it one of Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicles and highlighting the growing acceptance of EVs among local consumers.
To support increasing orders, the Proton e.MAS 5 is set to become the second locally assembled EV model at Tanjung Malim, joining the Proton e.MAS 7. Local assembly is expected to improve supply availability and reduce delivery times for customers.
PROTON’s overall NEV portfolio, which includes the e.MAS 5, e.MAS 7, and e.MAS 7 PHEV, recorded 11,617 units in sales between January and April 2026, representing a remarkable 329% year-on-year increase. The strong growth has strengthened the company’s position in Malaysia’s rapidly expanding electrified vehicle market.
Beyond boosting production, the plant expansion is expected to create new job opportunities and further strengthen Malaysia’s EV supply chain. The project also supports the country’s ambitions to develop a more advanced automotive industry while positioning Tanjung Malim as a regional hub for new energy vehicle manufacturing.
As EV adoption continues to gain momentum, PROTON’s latest investment signals its commitment to expanding local production capabilities and playing a leading role in the future of mobility across Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.
