Chery Malaysia Named Presenting Sponsor of Inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup
KUALA LUMPUR:Chery Malaysia has been named the presenting sponsor of the inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup (LCWC), a new national badminton tournament aimed at developing Malaysia’s next generation of shuttlers. The LCWC marks the first badminton event owned by former world number one Lee Chong Wei since his retirement in 2019. The tournament is endorsed by the Lee Chong Wei Foundation and sanctioned by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). Widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest players, Lee’s illustrious career includes three Olympic silver medals, 69 BWF titles, and a record 349 weeks as world number one. The debut LCWC is expected to attract around 3,200 players across Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 categories, featuring five events and offering a total prize pool of RM100,000. “I hope the Lee Chong Wei Cup can become a platform to identify and develop young talent, both technically and mentally,” Lee Chong Wei said. BAM president Tengku Datuk Sri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz welcomed the initiative, saying the tournament could help unearth future badminton stars. Chery Corporate Malaysia vice-president Cheng Nam Weng said the partnership reflects Chery’s commitment to youth development, inclusivity and community impact, while Chery Malaysia vice-president Lee Wen Hsiang expressed confidence that the LCWC will provide a structured pathway for emerging talents. Details on the venue and dates will be announced later. The sponsorship continues Chery’s support for local sports, following its backing of Malaysia’s Paris 2024 Olympic medallists and the Asian Youth Para Games 2025 contingent.
