Proton eMas 5: Malaysia’s Most Affordable EV, From RM60k

The highly anticipated Proton eMas 5 is set to make waves in Malaysia’s electric vehicle market, with order books now officially open ahead of its expected launch later this month.

Proton’s first entry-level electric car is positioned to be the most affordable EV in Malaysia, with estimated prices starting from RM60,000 for the Prime variant and up to RM80,000 for the Premium. Customers who book now with just RM99 will receive an eMas-branded Touch ’n Go NFC card (preloaded with RM100) and an additional RM500 rebate off the booking fee.

Built on the Geely Xingyuan (EX2) platform, the eMas 5 features a rear-wheel-drive layout and a multi-link rear suspension, setting it apart from most compact EVs that use a torsion beam setup.

Under the hood, the Prime variant is powered by a 79 PS (58 kW) motor and 30.12 kWh LFP battery, offering up to 225 km of range (WLTP). The Premium gets a stronger 116 PS (85 kW) motor with a 40.16 kWh battery, delivering 325 km of range. Both models support DC fast charging from 30–80% in 21 minutes, while the Premium allows up to 71 kW DC and 6.6 kW AC charging.

On the outside, the eMas 5 maintains the organic and modern design of its Geely counterpart, distinguished by a new C-pillar motif inspired by a “starry sky.” Buyers can choose from five exterior colours — Moonstone White, Graphite Silver, Slate Grey, and two Premium-exclusive shades: Marble Cream and Quartz Rose.

Safety is another strong point for the eMas 5. Six airbags and stability control are standard, while the Premium variant adds advanced driver assistance features such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and more.

With prices well below RM100,000, the Proton eMas 5 will soon face fierce competition from the BYD Atto 2, Dongfeng Box, TQ Wuling Bingo, and the upcoming Perodua EV. Still, Proton’s aggressive pricing strategy could make the eMas 5 the most accessible electric vehicle on Malaysian roads.
