End of an Era: Proton Saga Production Moves Out of Shah Alam
Proton has officially marked the end of production for its iconic Saga model at the Shah Alam plant, closing a historic chapter that began in 1985. The final third-generation Saga (MC2) rolled off the assembly line on September 26, 2025, bearing chassis number #454321.
This transition comes as part of Proton’s long-term plan to consolidate manufacturing at its Tanjong Malim facility, an initiative that traces back to the 2017 partnership between DRB-Hicom and Zhejiang Geely. Although the move was initially slated to be completed within five years, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down the timeline.
The Saga now joins the Iriz and Exora, both of which have also seen their production runs end in recent years — the Iriz on September 9, 2025, and the Exora in October 2023. Unlike those models, however, the Saga still has a future, with the upcoming MC3 generation slated to begin production in Tanjong Malim.
With Shah Alam no longer producing vehicles, questions remain over the fate of the facility that has been central to Proton’s history. At the same time, Proton is looking ahead, having announced an investment of RM253 million to set up two new stamping lines in Tanjong Malim, boosting production capacity and preparing the plant for the Saga’s next chapter.
As Proton’s longest-running and best-selling model, the Saga’s shift to Tanjong Malim marks the end of its four-decade run in Shah Alam but also signals a new beginning as the brand gears up for its next generation.
