IPOH (June 3) — Urban development should not be measured solely by the quality of its physical infrastructure, as arts, culture and meaningful human connections are equally essential in creating vibrant and inclusive communities, according to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
Speaking at the MADANI Philharmonic Musical Concert 2026: A Tune of Friendship and Unity in Harmony at the RTM Auditorium in Ipoh, Nga stressed that successful cities require more than modern buildings and public amenities.
While the government remains committed to enhancing infrastructure, improving public facilities and expanding affordable housing initiatives, he said urban planning must also focus on fostering a sense of belonging among residents.
According to Nga, even the most advanced city can lose its character and appeal if its people are unable to find happiness, connection and community spirit. He noted that world-class developments alone are not enough if residents do not feel emotionally connected to the places they live.
He highlighted the important role that arts, cultural programmes and community activities play in strengthening social bonds and transforming cities into welcoming environments where people feel valued and included.
Nga also emphasised that such initiatives provide opportunities for Malaysians from diverse backgrounds to build understanding, compassion and mutual respect. He described music as one of humanity’s most effective tools for bringing people together because it transcends differences in language, culture and geography.
In addition, he said Malaysia’s multicultural society should be regarded as a strength that contributes to the nation’s creativity, resilience and progress. By embracing diversity and working together, Malaysians can build a stronger and more admired nation.
The minister further urged the public to reject extremism and prejudice in favour of unity and shared values to ensure continued national prosperity and social harmony.
The concert featured performances by the Kinta Valley String Orchestra, Orchestra Kuala Lumpur and Feroci Philharmonic Orchestra, showcasing musicians from various backgrounds in a celebration of friendship, unity and cultural appreciation through music.
