KUALA LUMPUR (May 29): Transport Minister Anthony Loke has directed authorities to carry out a full investigation into Thursday’s LRT derailment incident and called for the strictest possible action against any party found responsible within Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Loke confirmed that the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has opened an official investigation paper into the incident.
A special task force has also been established to determine the exact cause of the derailment. According to Loke, the findings will be submitted to the Cabinet once completed and later released publicly to ensure transparency.
The incident involved a train operating on the Ampang and Sri Petaling LRT lines, which derailed while passing a track switch near Chan Sow Lin LRT Station. The disruption affected several rail services across the network.
Rapid KL confirmed that 25 passengers were on board during the incident. All passengers were safely evacuated in accordance with standard operating procedures, and no injuries were reported.
The latest derailment adds to growing concerns over the reliability of Kuala Lumpur’s urban rail system. Earlier this month, services on the Kelana Jaya LRT line were disrupted during peak hours after a technical malfunction caused a train to stall, resulting in major commuter delays.
Loke stressed that Prasarana’s management and board members must not treat the incident as routine, warning that a “business-as-usual” mindset is unacceptable when public safety is involved.
He emphasised that safety and service reliability standards in Malaysia’s public transport system must remain a top priority and should never be compromised.
The minister also urged the Prasarana board to take decisive disciplinary measures, including dismissals if necessary, against individuals found negligent in carrying out their responsibilities.
