Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd (LCSB), the authorised operator of the Genting Highlands road network, will introduce road charges for vehicles entering Genting Highlands in two phases beginning May 28 and June 28, 2026.
Effective May 28, all permitted road users, except those under exempted categories, will be required to pay a road charge upon entering Jalan Genting Highlands. Payments will be collected at the Genting Highlands entry point in Genting Sempah and the Gohtong Jaya entry point at the Gohtong Jaya roundabout.
Under the new rate structure, Class 1 vehicles comprising cars and vans will be charged RM5 per entry at both locations. Medium lorries (Class 2) will be charged RM15, while heavy lorries (Class 3) will pay RM25. Taxis (Class 4) will be charged RM3.30, and buses (Class 5) will pay RM5.
LCSB stated that vehicles in Classes 2, 3, 4 and 5 must enter through designated “Lorong Khas” lanes or use the licence plate recognition (LPR) system.
Certain categories of vehicles will be exempted from the road charges, including emergency vehicles, motorcycles and private vehicles belonging to public servants working at designated government institutions in Genting Highlands.
Starting June 28, eligible permanent residents of Genting Highlands will be able to register up to two Class 1 vehicles under a special resident programme. Registered vehicles will enjoy a preferential rate that is 10% lower than the standard road charge per entry when using the LPR lanes or Lorong Khas.
LCSB added that registered resident vehicles will not be charged before June 28. The company will also introduce a six-month season pass scheme for registered permanent residents, allowing unlimited entries into Jalan Genting Highlands during the validity period via LPR lanes or Lorong Khas.
The season pass is expected to provide greater convenience and cost savings for residents who travel frequently within the Genting Highlands area. Interested permanent residents may apply for the pass and complete the required payment process to participate in the programme.
What I Learned
The introduction of road charges marks a significant change in access management for Genting Highlands, with motorists required to pay up to RM5 per entry from May 28. While the new system creates an additional cost for visitors, permanent residents will receive discounted rates and the option of an unlimited-entry season pass. The move appears aimed at supporting the maintenance and management of the highland road network while balancing the needs of local residents through preferential pricing and exemptions.
