Trans-Borneo Railway Feasibility Study Underway, Sarawak Transport Minister Confirms

KUCHING (Dec 2): The Trans-Borneo Railway project is making steady progress, with feasibility and planning studies ongoing under the coordination of the Ministry of Transport (MOT) Malaysia and active participation from the Sarawak Ministry of Transport.

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin confirmed that the first interim report was presented on Oct 30, 2025, and the full feasibility study is slated for completion by June 2026.

“Since the project commenced in June 2025, two technical workshops have been conducted with relevant agencies from Sabah to review preliminary findings and strengthen planning coordination,” Lee said during the winding-up session at the State Legislative Assembly.

A preliminary railway alignment has been proposed and will be refined as the study progresses. The Trans-Borneo Railway is viewed as a transformative initiative that aims to enhance regional connectivity, support economic integration, and improve mobility across Borneo, potentially unlocking new commercial, industrial, and logistics opportunities in the region.
