As the Lunar New Year and Hari Raya approach, the demand for fireworks in Malaysia has increased sharply. Over the past three months, 2,208 containers of fireworks were imported through Port Klang, much higher than in previous years.
Between 1 December 2024 and 8 January 2025, 680 containers of fireworks entered the country. This increase shows that demand has grown steadily since fireworks were legalized two years ago.
All fireworks imported into Malaysia come from China. Before importing, traders must apply for approval from the authorities, including permits from the police.
From November last year until 27 January this year, 888 containers arrived through North Port, while 1,320 containers came through West Port. More shipments are expected as festive celebrations continue.
Because fireworks are flammable and dangerous goods, they are cleared quickly once ships arrive. Fireworks are not allowed to be stored at the port to reduce safety risks.
Earlier congestion at Singapore ports caused some delays at Port Klang, with ships waiting up to three days to berth. The situation has since improved, and waiting times are now much shorter.
