PE Core vs FR Core Aluminium Composite Panel: Which One Should You Choose?

PE Core vs FR Core Aluminium Composite Panel: Which One Should You Choose?

In our previous article on ACP Thickness Guide for Different Applications, we explored how panel thickness plays a crucial role depending on where Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) are used. In this article, we shift focus to another equally important componentthe core material, specifically PE (Polyethylene) and FR (Fire Retardant) cores and how to choose the right one for your project.

What is PE Core?

PE (Polyethylene) is a type of thermoplastic material commonly used as the core layer in ACP. It is lightweight, flexible, and cost-effective, making it a practical choice for many non-critical applications.

ACP with a PE core is widely used in projects and buildings which is less than 18 metres height. Its advantages include:
  • Lightweight and easy to install
  • Flatness quality
  • Cost-efficient for large-scale usage

In Malaysia, PE core ACP is typically used for:
  • Roofing systems
  • Signage and advertising panels
  • Interior decorative applications

At MBond, several product series utilise PE core, including:
  • UNI-S Series – commonly used for roofing applications
  • UNI-R Series – suitable for signage
  • WS-MB Series – used for interior decorative panels and occasionally roofing, depending on design creativity
  • MB9000 Series – typically used for signage, especially for projects requiring a natural aluminium (mill finish) appearance

For these applications, PE core is generally sufficient and performs effectively when used appropriately.

What is FR Core?

FR (Fire Retardant) core ACP is specifically engineered to reduce the risk of fire spread. Unlike PE core, FR core contains a mixture of mineral fillers (such as aluminium hydroxide) combined with a reduced amount of combustible material. This formulation helps to slow down flame spread and minimise debris release during a fire.

The development of FR core ACP is largely driven by increasing safety requirements in modern construction, particularly after global incidents involving façade fires. As a result, stricter regulations have been introduced, especially for high-rise buildings 18 metres and above.

Key advantages of FR core include:
  • Reduced flame spread
  • Better compliance with fire safety regulations
  • Improved safety for occupants and surrounding structures

Why is FR Core Required for High-Rise Buildings?

In Malaysia, buildings exceeding 18 metres in height or more than 5 storeys typically require fire-retardant building materials. This is especially critical in dense urban environments, such as the city centre, where buildings are closely spaced.

In the event of a fire, we would want to prevent the rapid vertical fire spreading across façades. FR core ACP helps mitigate this risk by slowing down combustion, allowing more time for evacuation and firefighting efforts.

For façade applications, choosing the right ACP is not just a design decision. It is a compliance requirement aligned with safety regulations and industry standards such as SIRIM, CIDB, and Bomba requirement.

MBond FR Core Solution

At MBond, our MBC Series is designed with FR core to meet façade safety requirements. It is readily available in four standard colours:
  • Metallic Black
  • Metallic Silver
  • Metallic Grey
  • White

Custom colours are also available upon request, subject to minimum order quantity (MOQ). For more information, feel free to reach out to our team.

Conclusion

Choosing between PE and FR core ACP depends largely on your project application. For roofing, signage, and interior uses, PE core panels offer a practical and cost-effective solution. However, for façades especially in high-rise buildingsFR core is essential to meet safety requirements and ensure long-term protection.

MBond is a leading ACP manufacturer in Malaysia, meeting key safety and quality standards, including:
  • SIRIM MS2571:2017 Certification
  • BS8414 Fire Performance Testing
  • BOMBA Compliance
  • CIDB PPS Certification

With proper design planning, appropriate material selection, and professional installation, your project can achieve both strong structural performance and lasting aesthetic value.
