RM800m Saved Through Budi Madani RON 95 Fuel Scheme
The introduction of the Budi Madani RON 95 fuel subsidy scheme has helped the government reduce expenditure by RM800 million since it came into effect on September 30, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He explained that the programme was designed to ensure fuel subsidies are enjoyed exclusively by Malaysians, addressing long-standing issues such as subsidy leakages and illegal fuel activities that previously benefited millions of non-citizens. The savings generated are being reinvested into public welfare programmes, including direct financial assistance, healthcare upgrades, and infrastructure improvements such as road maintenance and facility enhancements. Official figures show that by November 30, nearly 14 million Malaysians had purchased subsidised RON 95 petrol, accounting for more than 80% of eligible users. During this period, over 2.5 billion litres of fuel were sold at the subsidised rate of RM1.99 per litre. Earlier assessments projected that the scheme could deliver annual savings of RM2.5 billion to RM4 billion, depending on global oil market conditions. Based on current trends, the government expects the programme’s savings to meet or surpass those estimates. Under the subsidy framework, Malaysian MyKad holders aged 16 and above who possess a valid driving licence are entitled to buy up to 300 litres of RON 95 per month at the subsidised price. The unsubsidised market price for the same fuel currently stands at RM2.62 per litre for the week of December 18 to 24.
