Ramadan brings longer prayers, deeper reflection, and repeated movements of sujud (prostration).
For some people, especially after the first week, something else appears:
👉 Pain when going down into sujud
👉 Sharp discomfort when rising
👉 Stiffness after prayer
👉 Swelling around the knee
👉 Difficulty kneeling
It may feel sudden.
But knee pain during sujud is usually not random.
Your body is trying to send you a message.
Let’s understand what it means. 👇
During sujud, your knee is placed in:
• Deep flexion (fully bent position)
• High compression
• Bodyweight loading
• Repeated transitions
Deep bending increases pressure inside the knee joint — especially under the kneecap (patella).
If the joint is healthy and strong, this is usually well tolerated.
If not, irritation develops.
During Ramadan:
• Prayer duration increases
• Standing and kneeling repetitions increase
• Daily activity patterns change
• Hydration may decrease
• Muscle endurance drops
For knees with:
• Early cartilage wear
• Weak quadriceps
• Tight thigh muscles
• Previous injuries
The increased load triggers inflammation.
📌 Sujud doesn’t “damage” the knee — it exposes existing weakness.
1️⃣ Patellofemoral Pain
Pain at the front of the knee due to poor tracking of the kneecap.
2️⃣ Early Osteoarthritis
Cartilage thinning makes deep bending more uncomfortable.
3️⃣ Tight Quadriceps
Tight thigh muscles increase compression behind the kneecap.
4️⃣ Weak Hip Muscles
Poor hip control increases knee stress.
5️⃣ Meniscus Irritation
Deep bending may irritate sensitive structures.
Going down into sujud loads the joint.
Standing up requires strength.
If quadriceps are weak:
• Knee shakes
• Sharp pain appears
• You feel unstable
This is often a strength issue — not a structural tear.
Strong thigh muscles protect the knee.
Better hip control reduces knee compression.
Reduces pressure behind kneecap.
Small cushion or modified depth temporarily.
Ice after long sessions if inflamed.
Even small increases raise joint load.
If knee pain persists, physiotherapy can:
• Reduce inflammation
• Improve joint mobility
• Strengthen knee and hip muscles
• Correct kneeling mechanics
• Improve muscle endurance
Knee pain during sujud is often a load management problem — not a permanent condition.
Is knee pain during sujud normal?
Mild discomfort may occur. Persistent pain is not normal.
Does sujud cause arthritis?
No. Arthritis develops gradually. Sujud may reveal it.
Should I avoid kneeling completely?
Not necessarily — modify temporarily while strengthening.
Why does one knee hurt more than the other?
Imbalance, previous injury, or dominance.
Is this a meniscus tear?
Most cases are muscular or joint irritation. Severe locking needs assessment.
Will it improve after Ramadan?
If weakness remains, pain may recur.
When should I seek treatment?
If swelling, locking, or persistent pain occurs.
Sujud is a powerful act of devotion.
Your knees should feel stable — not strained.
Often, knee pain during Ramadan is a signal:
Your muscles need support.
Your joints need conditioning.
Your body needs balance.
With proper strengthening and guidance, you can continue your prayers comfortably and confidently.
Ramadan strengthens the soul.
Let’s strengthen the body too.
