Malton Explores Electric Motorcycle Assembly and Distribution Venture in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 27): Property developer Malton Bhd has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China-based Dongguan Benling Vehicle Technology Co Ltd (BENLG) to evaluate a potential collaboration involving electric motorcycle assembly and the development of a distribution network in Malaysia.

In a Bursa Malaysia filing, Malton said the discussions will centre on feasibility studies and market analysis for electric motorcycles, covering both the Malaysian market and the broader Southeast Asian region.

Under the proposed collaboration, BENLG is assessing the viability of establishing operations in Malaysia and is seeking a local partner to support its entry into the electric motorcycle segment. Malton noted that the initiative is in line with its diversification strategy into green mobility and future-oriented industries, with Malaysia potentially serving as BENLG’s next regional hub as it expands its presence across Asean.

As part of the MOU, both parties will assess suitable locations for a possible electric motorcycle assembly facility, engage with relevant government agencies on regulatory and compliance matters, and evaluate the required capital investment and ownership structure for the venture.

The feasibility review will also consider positioning Malaysia as an assembly and distribution gateway for electric two-wheelers across the Asean market.

The MOU is valid for a period of nine months or until a definitive agreement is signed, and may be terminated by either party with 30 days’ written notice. Apart from confidentiality obligations, the agreement is non-binding.

Founded in 2003, BENLG is a manufacturer of electric motorcycles, scooters and tricycles, with production facilities in Tianjin, Wuxi and Taizhou, as well as a 60,000-square-metre headquarters in Dongguan. The company also operates international branches in India, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, and exports its products to more than 65 countries worldwide.

This initiative marks Malton’s second attempt to venture into the electric vehicle space. In 2021, the group signed an MOU with Ho Wah Genting Bhd to explore the acquisition of a 14% stake in HWGB EV Sdn Bhd for a proposed EV assembly and distribution venture in Malaysia. That agreement expired in March 2022 without further progress.

From a property and infrastructure standpoint, the growth of electric vehicle manufacturing and assembly supports continued demand for industrial land in Selangor, particularly sites suitable for advanced manufacturing. It also complements demand for factory developments in Puchong and established industrial property in the Subang area, while downstream activities and corporate operations continue to underpin interest in commercial property in KL and modern office space in Bukit Jalil.
