⚡ Understanding Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

🔋 What is BESS?

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is an advanced technology designed to store electrical energy for later use. It plays a vital role in modern renewable energy systems, especially when combined with solar power.
In simple terms, BESS allows stored solar energy generated during the day to be used at night or during peak demand periods, ensuring a more stable and efficient power supply.

⚙️ How Does BESS Work?

A typical BESS setup includes several key components:

  • Battery Pack – Usually lithium-ion or LFP batteries

  • Battery Management System (BMS) – Monitors and protects the battery’s performance

  • Inverter / Power Conversion System (PCS) – Converts DC energy from batteries to AC energy for use

  • Energy Management System (EMS) – Controls charging, discharging, and energy flow

When paired with solar PV systems, BESS stores excess solar energy during the day and releases it during periods of low sunlight or high electricity demand.

🌍 Why is BESS Important?

BESS plays a critical role in Malaysia’s transition toward clean and sustainable energy.
Its benefits include:
Maximizing Solar Efficiency – Store excess daytime energy for nighttime use
Reducing Electricity Costs – Use stored energy during peak tariff hours
Enhancing Grid Stability – Prevent sudden voltage fluctuations
Backup Power Supply – Provide reliable energy during grid outages

Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) highlights BESS as one of the key enablers to achieve the country’s goal of reaching 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050.

⚡ Upcoming Regulation: BESS Requirement for SELCO Solar Systems

Starting from next year, solar installations under SELCO (Self-Consumption) scheme up to 72kWp will be required to include a BESS system with a minimum capacity based on the solar design requirements.
This new guideline aims to promote better energy management and ensure that renewable systems can operate efficiently and independently from the grid.

The BESS system is especially beneficial for Tariff E consumers and above — typically medium and high voltage users such as factories or large commercial buildings.
These consumers face Maximum Demand (MD) Charges, which are often the main contributor to high electricity bills.
By using BESS, businesses can discharge stored energy during peak demand periods, effectively reducing the MD charge and optimizing total energy costs.

💡 QRE’s Vision in Energy Storage

At Quantum Renewable Energy (QRE), we believe that energy storage will shape the future of renewable energy in Malaysia.
By integrating solar PV systems with advanced BESS technology, QRE aims to help industries and businesses achieve greater energy independence, cost efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
