What Is Relative Humidity and Why Should Manufacturers Care?

Humidity is a natural part of the environment, but in manufacturing and product storage, it becomes more than just weather, it becomes a factor that can affect quality, shelf life, and customer satisfaction. One of the most important measurements that businesses should understand is relative humidity (RH).

Relative humidity refers to the amount of water vapour present in the air compared to the maximum amount the air can hold at a specific temperature. In simple terms, it shows how “full” the air is with moisture. When the air is warm, it can hold more moisture; when it is cooler, it holds less. This means RH can change even if the actual amount of moisture stays the same.

Understanding RH is crucial for manufacturers because humidity directly affects product quality during production, packaging, storage, and delivery. When relative humidity is too high, the excess moisture can cause problems such as mould growth, corrosion, lumping, discoloration, or texture changes. This is especially risky for sensitive products like electronics, food items, metal components, and pharmaceuticals.

Moisture-related damage does not always happen immediately, sometimes it develops slowly over time, especially during long-distance transportation or seasonal weather changes. Even well-packed items can be affected if moisture is trapped inside the packaging or if temperature shifts cause condensation.

By monitoring and managing relative humidity, manufacturers can prevent many of these issues before they occur. Using desiccants, oxygen absorbers, proper ventilation, and controlled storage conditions helps maintain stability and protects products throughout the supply chain.
