Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP): Key Factors to Consider Before Purchase

Today, more property owners and developers are turning to Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) to enhance the appearance of buildings and homes. Its clean, modern finish makes it a popular choice across façadesroofing, and interior applications.

However, before selecting an ACP product, it is important to understand what to look for beyond aesthetics. In our previous article, we explored the differences between ACP and solid aluminium panels. This time, we focus on the key checks you should perform to ensure the ACP you choose is suitable, compliant, and reliable for your project.

Project Safety Requirements

Every project comes with its own safety considerations, depending on the building's height, scale, and intended usage. In Malaysia, selecting ACP products that are certified by SIRIM is an important step in ensuring product quality and compliance. Compliance with local authorities and regulatory requirements, including those set by Bomba and CIDB, is also critical for façade and building applications.

Before purchasing ACP, check:
  • Thickness of the ACP must be taken into consideration
  • Fire safety requirements for your building type
  • Whether flame-retardant (FR) cores are required
  • If specific ACP classifications are recommended or mandated

Therefore, to avoid safety risks, it is important to select the right product for the intended application. Always confirm that your chosen product aligns with project specifications and regulatory expectations.

ACP Quality and Performance

Quality ACP is designed to deliver reliable performance, consistent appearance, and long-term durability for modern façade applications. Products that meet recognized standards are manufactured with controlled material composition and production consistency to ensure dependable performance throughout the project lifecycle.

Key qualities of high-performance ACP include:
  • Consistent coating and colour finish
  • Strong bonding strength between panel layers
  • Smooth and uniform surface appearance
  • Excellent resistance to weather, UV exposure, and long-term outdoor conditions
High-quality ACP should maintain its appearance and structural integrity even under Malaysia’s sunlight and rainy season. To ensure the right selection for a project, it is recommended to review certificates and physical samples during the material evaluation process.

Warranty and After-Installation Considerations

Warranty coverage is an important part of ensuring long-term confidence and performance in any project, from smaller developments to large-scale critical applications. A well-supported warranty reflects the manufacturer’s commitment to product quality, durability, and reliability throughout the building lifecycle.

ACP warranty commonly covers key performance aspects such as:
  • Fade or change color in excess of five (5) Delta E units (Hunter Color Difference), as measured using the procedure of ASTM D-2244, comparing an unexposed retain panel to the exposed panel after removal of dirt and chalk
  • Chalk in excess of a numerical rating eight (8), as measured using the procedure of ASTM D4214-89 (Method D-659)
  • The lamination layers between two aluminium skin and PE/FR will not delaminate, separate or loose adhesion on both sides

For example, ACP products with KYNAR 500 PVDF coating are engineered to deliver outstanding colour retention and long-term surface performance. This advanced coating technology helps panels maintain a consistent and refined appearance even after years of exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

Proper installation and post-installation handling also contribute to maintaining the product’s appearance and performance. Protective film applied during installation should be removed within the recommended timeframe, typically within 45 days, to ensure the panel surface remains clean and well-maintained.

A trusted manufacturer should also provide a clear warranty policy, technical support, and a proven track record of consistent product performance across various project applications.

Manufacturer’s Experience and Track Record

The number of years a manufacturer has been established can indicate reliability and consistency.

An experienced manufacturer is more likely to have:
  • Refined production processes
  • Stable product quality
  • Proven project references
  • Better technical support

Established brands like MBond also have stricter quality control and a stronger understanding of local compliance requirements, which reduces project risk.

Local vs International Manufacturers

Choosing between local and overseas suppliers involves more than just price comparison.

International suppliers may offer:
  • Competitive pricing
  • Wider product variety

However, potential drawbacks include:
  • Longer lead times
  • Limited local support
  • Possible mismatch with Malaysian certification requirements

Local manufacturers, on the other hand, provide:
  • Faster delivery timelines
  • Better accessibility for support and site coordination
  • Products tailored to local regulations and weather conditions

For time-sensitive projects or those requiring strict compliance, working with a local manufacturer can significantly reduce delays and uncertainties.

Making the Right Choice for Your Project

Selecting the right ACP goes beyond design preference as it is a decision that directlimpacts safety, compliance, and long-term performance.

A reliable ACP solution should meet recognized standards such as SIRIM certification, fire performance testing, and local authority requirements. More importantly, it should come from a trusted manufacturer with proven quality and consistent delivery.

As Malaysia continues to adopt modern architectural solutions, ACP remains a key material for façades, roofing, signage, and interior applications. Its versatility, durability, and cost efficiency make it a preferred choice across the industry.

By prioritizing certified, high-quality ACP, architects, designers, and developers can ensure their projects achieve not only a striking visual finish, but also long-lasting performance and full regulatory compliance.
