Proton Hints at Sleeker eMas 5 Design in Latest Giveaway Visual
The upcoming Proton eMas 5, which is widely expected to be based on the Geely Xingyuan (also known as the Star Wish in China), may feature some unique styling changes for the Malaysian market. While it will likely share its platform, powertrain, and most features with its Chinese twin – much like the eMas 7 does with the Galaxy E5/EX5 – a recent teaser image shared in Proton’s “Electrify Your Life” giveaway campaign hints at a possible redesign up front. The image shows a car with sharper, almond-shaped headlights, a wider and more pronounced front intake, and a bonnet line that stretches closer to the lights, giving it a more aggressive, sporty look. This is a noticeable shift from the friendlier, rounded design of the Star Wish, and could be an intentional move to cater to Malaysian preferences. However, there’s strong reason to believe this image might be AI-generated, as the headlight internals look distorted, and the bumper inlets are asymmetrical. Furthermore, other posts about the same giveaway only show a covered car, which is also clearly an AI rendering. In terms of performance, the eMas 5 is expected to come with two configurations: one offering 79 PS and 130 Nm of torque paired with a 30.12 kWh battery for up to 310 km of range (based on China’s CLTC cycle), and a higher-end variant delivering 116 PS and 150 Nm with a 40.16 kWh battery capable of around 410 km of range. For the Malaysian market, it would be more practical if Proton considered using larger battery packs, possibly the ones from the eMas 7, to better suit local driving conditions. As for the launch timeline, the Proton eMas 5 is expected to debut in Q4 2025, likely in CBU (fully imported) form initially. This is because Proton’s new EV manufacturing plant in Tanjong Malim, which will begin operations by the end of 2025, will prioritize the eMas 7 first. Given that CBU EV tax exemptions are set to expire before 2026, the eMas 5 could be subject to import duties unless Proton negotiates a special deal with the government. While we still await official confirmation, this teaser has certainly stirred interest. Whether the final design ends up being sportier or sticks to the original Star Wish styling, one thing’s for sure – Proton is getting serious about electrifying the Malaysian road.
